As the country and Texas take a turn towards shithole status, we've been dreaming of moving (and building) in Canada. Although we are too old and have too many cats for our Neighbors to the North to adopt us, it's nice to dream, right? We adored Newfoundland on a recent trip and, after finding a spectacular piece of land with ocean views, looked into the local architecture scene.
First up is Lat 49 Architecture. They appear to be focused on more institutional and larger private commissions, but are also the architects of record for the fabulous hotel on Fogo Island:
Although Lat 49 is the architect of record, Todd Saunders designed the hotel along with a spectacular collection of studios scattered across the island (including the photo at the top):
Woodford Architecture seems to have embraced shou sugi ban:
