When I posted about Eero's arch a couple weeks ago, I realized that I hadn't posted about visiting Eero's TWA Flight Center a couple years ago. This was our first post-covid trip when we flew to Iceland to see gusgus perform at their twice-postponed 25-year anniversary concerts.
Since we had a bit of a layover in New York and wanted to take a shower and nap before jumping on a plane to the Land of Fire and Ice, we day-rented a room at the terminal. We also wanted to check out the restored terminal, now existing as a museum piece and hotel.
Wow! Like a scene straight outta Star Trek, the TWA terminal bends and curves in all kinds of crazy, space-organic directions. Built between 1959 and 1962, the terminal handled airline traffic from 1962 to 2001. And it's a stunner. Adding to the hipness is a hotel bar in an old TWA plane (yes, we cocktailed). They even had a Fiat Jolly and BMW Isetta along with a few other era cars available when the terminal opened. The vertical tile in the hotel bathroom inspired the vertical tile in the bathrooms in our cabin.
